"HP Endorsement of XMCL Initiative John S. Erickson, Ph.D. 16 July 2001 Electronic publishing and information commerce encompass a wide range of media types, business models and rich and diverse value chains, and we expect digital rights management (DRM) solutions to play a key role in establishing exciting new applications for media that will touch our business and private lives. DRM is a new and inherently complex field, however; it is an arena that requires providers of systems and services to create solutions that are effective, efficient, and provide the least intrusive user experience possible. These factors demand layered solutions, based upon open standards, that encourage both horizontal and vertical interoperability. Inconsistency between technology vendors has only served to confuse stakeholders in the value chain: creators, producers, publishers, intermediaries of all types, and especially end users. This has created an environment that has hindered opportunity and has generally slowed the adoption of solutions. Open standards, scalability and extensibility have been the basis for the explosive growth of the Internet. HP believes that standards at several levels will also be important to the successful integration of DRM technologies into information-driven business processes, says Dr. John Erickson, Systems Program Manager for DRM at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. We see the XMCL initiative as taking an important step towards achieving consistency in the area of rights and policy expression, an essential basis for interoperability for DRM systems and services. Cross-organizational, networked services that provide frictionless, distributed rights management will depend upon consistent standards in many areas. Researchers at HP Labs have been involved in a number of industry initiatives that are key to the evolution of digital rights management, including the W3C, DOI, the project, OeBF/EBX, various rights metadata initiatives, as well as XML itself. Ultimately, semantic interoperability in rights message exchange, including rights transaction protocols and verbose rights expression languages such as XMCL, will be essential to information commerce, says Erickson. Hewlett-Packard actively endorses the XMCL initiative and will continue to drive for interoperable standards in the important field of digital rights management. HP plans to participate in XMCL.org; for more information, contact John Erickson at john_erickson@hpl.hp.com. About HP |
